Special ID (2013) / Sleeping Dogs (2012)

Brutal fights, raw action, a pure ganster feeling and Donnie Yen at his best make for an incredible film. I watched Special ID twice now and wouldn't mind to watch it again. It's been a while since I was such TV-junkie. I just want more! That's the reason why I added the game Sleeping Dogs to the post, because it just gives you more of what Special ID offers.

SPECIAL ID

I was going to post the trailer here to give you an idea of what you could expect of Donnie's latest film Special ID, but to be honest, the trailer isn't good enough. Just take my word for it that you have to watch this one.

Special ID refers to Donnie Yen's status in the film. He plays an undercover cop in Hong Kong with a mission to infiltrate the Triads. That isn't a very new concept. HK cinema had many movies about the underground mafia , but for some reason it still works. I guess that asians just look really gangsta when they are beating people up with their bare fists. I mean, Jet Li for example is a pretty decent fighting machine, but put him next to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Silvester Stallone and suddenly he looks like a cute guy trying to hang with the big guys.

Anyway, the story isn't the reason why you want to watch Special ID. It is the all about the fight choreography and how Donnie Yen is an absolute brawler. Despite the fact that he is 50 years old already, he still fights with brute power. I was just amazed during the first fights. I guess I still had a vision of Donnie as Ip Man in the back of my head, being all polite and reasonable. Here, he has no rules, he fights to kill. At one point he is beating someone up while some other gangsters look at it from behind a window. While Donnie already knocked his opponent out, he decides to point his middle finger up to the other guys and continues to beat the &$# out of the guy. Eyes-wide-open-on-the-edge-of-my-seat-mode!

Just click the link below and go watch that film and come back to read the rest of the post. I know you'll want to.

SLEEPING DOGS

Alright, so you're all hyped up and want to be the undercover cop in Hong Kong? Buy and install Sleeping Dogs and you'll be busy for another 20 hours. In Sleeping Dogs you'll be Wei Shen. Grew up in HK, lived in the USA for a few years and comes back to - you guessed it - infiltrate the Triads from within. While Special ID's storyline isn't that strong, I really liked the story of Sleeping Dogs. You get a strong connection to the characters and begin to understand how difficult it is for Wei Shen to decide on which side he stands.

Sleeping Dogs mechanics are rock solid. Like other games in the open-world genre, you'll get to drive cars, walk around, fight and shoot. The driving is very arcady, but not to a point that it is disturbing. It is fast and fun to drive around and shoot out tires in slow-motion. It is the fighting system that really stands out. Wei Shen knows a lot of moves and because of the leveling system you'll learn more brutal finishing attacks troughout the game. Basically you have an attack button, a grab button and a counter button. If you tap attack, Wei attacks quick. Hold the button for a bit longer and he attacks with a heavy attack. By switching between quick and heavy attacks Wei makes beautiful combos. You can also do this while you're grabbling your opponents. Press the counter button when you're being attacked and Wei will quickly react. What really stands out are the environmental attacks. In short, you grab your opponents and them smash them into objects in the surrounding. This can be a dumbster, an air vent, a speaker, a telephone booth, you can smash a head between a the car and the door, you can trow them through windows and so on. Wei also wields knifes, sticks, guns, and fish...swordfish to be exact.

The last thing I want to talk about is the soundtrack. It is diverse and consists of artist from Flying Lotus to Bach, from Emika to 24Herbs. Listen to it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znBKFp_o74Q

I really enjoyed Sleeping Dogs, so if you liked Special ID and are into gaming, I'd suggest you go get this game.

PS. You might also want to check out the 2 videos below. The first is the live action trailer of Sleeping Dogs, the second is a fan-made trailer which is at least just as good. Enjoy!
