Ocean Heaven (2010)
While we have a beautiful Indian summer, autumn kicks in hard today with rain and wind. Plus, here in The Netherlands, it is officially winter since today. The perfect reason for spending an evening on the couch, watching your favourite action hero Jet Li. Although he won't be doing so much action in today's film Ocean Heaven, his acting is top notch. I highly recommend this one.
In Ocean Heaven Jet plays his first full drama role of a terminally ill father who struggles to take care of his autistic son. He raised his son mostly alone, for his wife died 14 years ago. I know, dramaaaaa. And to be honest, it IS drama. So much drama it almost got me crying (and let me tell you it's pretty difficult to get me crying). Jet plays a fantastic part and is so fragile. We all know him for being a bad-ass kicking-ass hero, but this is something different. I know he's an okay actor, but in Ocean Heaven he proves that he's better than just okay. Also Wen Zhang, who playes the son, does a brilliant job. If I didn't know any better, I'd say he actually is autistic.
I won't say to much about the film for I would only ruin the experience. Expect a simple story, but very deep characters. It is in all the little details that makes this movie perfect. From Jet trying to teach his son some basic things like cleaning up his room to conversations that describe the relationship between the father and his neighbour and boss. A definite must-see for I think Ocean Heaven is much better than some drama movies nominated in the States.
