Gorgeous (1999)

Alright people, this week we're going back to the oldschool and to one of my favorite Jackie Chan movies: Gorgeous. Compared to other Jackie movies, this one's a bit different: a more romantic storyline and a less goofy fights. The reason why Gorgeous is one of my favorites is that Jackie tries something new and makes it amazingly believable.

The story sets off with Qi Shu who is being led to leave her hometown by a hilarious Tony Leung. (Seriously, you'll never see him like this in another movie again!) She then meets Chan. During the film Qi Shi and Jackie Chan grow closer to each other and - as all relations - have to overcome certain problems and obstacles. Sounds boring right? Yeah, that's what I thought. It is actually really funny and has a certain Stephen Chow vibe to it (you might know him from Kungfu Hustle or Shaolin Soccer). If you like these kind of comedies, make sure you check out the HongKong version. It is longer than the US version and features a cameo from Stephen Chow.

For the martial arts fanatic there is also something to look forward to. Gorgeous only has two real fight scenes, but they may be one of the best Jackie has ever filmed. I was drooling the whole time. His fights are with Bradley James Allan and are much more serious than the typical comedy fights you know from Jackie. The fighting style is a light foot boxing style which you'll love. I remember I tried to copy those moves all the time when I was younger. It is especially amazing because Bradley didn't use any wires while filming. Jackie was so impressed and happy with his skills that he became the first non-Chinese member of Jackie Chan's stunt team.

Enough said, I think you should definitely check out Gorgeous and because I got so excited I found the most awesome trailer of the movie (watch it, seriously) AND I found the entire HK version on the net. Low quality though but still..

Have fun!
