Detective Dee is a Sherlock Holmes-like mystery staged in the era where the one and only empress Wu was about to rule China. Empress Wu ordered a 66m high buddha building in front of the palace for her inauguration. When the construction is nearly finished strange things start to happen. (I write it in this way so I won't spoil anything). As with every mystery, nothing is clear in the beginning and the same could be said for this movie. I had no clue what was going on and what the relationship between the characters was. The further you get into the movie, the more you'll understand and the better the movie gets in my opinion.
The fight scenes were choreographed by no one else but Sammo Hung, so you know they are as stunning as they can get. Plus the fights in this film bring some new elements to the table which really surprised me. You'll have to check it out yourself to understand, but let's just say the CGI was really nicely put together.
With Tsui Hark as a director (known for movies like Seven Swords and the Once Upon A Time In China series) the film's artistic and dramatic aspects are spot on and the visuals are awesome. Prepare for some epic scenery and huge set pieces.
Be sure you're not too sleepy when watching this one, the story's pretty complex, but without a lot of historical background still understandable.
Overall, it's a very enjoyable ride and totally worth your time. If you decide to watch this one or already seen it, please let me know what you think of it :)
